Soulterior X Steve Gourlay
Soulterior is excited to offer a print collection amongst our first curated wares, in this inaugural collaboration with photographer Steve Gourlay. Here’s our thoughts on this collaboration behind the scenes and our intention behind it.
This collection is personal as I’ve had the rare privilege of witnessing the creative world of Steve from the inside. For decades, Steve Gourlay has quietly shaped the visual identity of Australian skate culture capturing feats of movement, rebellion and art with both a technicality and grittiness that is unmistakably his.
While Steve has collaborated with brands, galleries and magazines - publishing and exhibiting within Australia and internationally much of his archive has, somewhat by design, lived privately, seen in fragments, but rarely presented as a body of work offered for collection. Until now, and I am chuffed Steve has collaborated with me through Soulterior.
Curating this Archive Series - Grain was an organic response formed through proximity and years of seeing Steve move through the world with a camera in hand, committing to the moments and forging images that look effortless yet in fact carry their own hefty backstory. This black and white series holds grit, stillness, energy, and memory in equal measure and I am excited to bring them into the realm of contemporary interiors and hope they will evoke feeling, energy and nostalgia for others.
This is the first chapter of what we hope will become a growing, evolving exploration of Steve’s archive and a chance to share more of the images that have shaped a culture and mean so much to us personally.
These artworks don’t just live on a wall. They carry a life lived, and they invite you into it.
